The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Flash Back 2012 is a 30-minute original video animation (OVA) released on June 21, 1987, to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Macross franchise. Directed by Shoji Kawamori, it serves as a collection of music videos tracking the series' famous love triangle through the songs of pop idol character Lynn Minmay.
The Narrative Premise
The framing story is set in September 2012. It depicts Lynn Minmay's final "Sayonara World Tour" concert in New Macross City. As she sings, the video cycles through a nostalgic montage of key events from her past.
The concert coincides with a massive milestone for humanity: the launch of the Megaroad-01, Earth's first super-long-range space emigration vessel. The ship is captained by Misa Hayase, with her husband Hikaru Ichijyo leading the variable fighter escort unit. At the conclusion, the trio leaves Earth behind to spread human culture across the galaxy.
Exclusive New Footage
While roughly 20 minutes of the OVA consist of recycled footage from the 1982 television series and the 1984 movie Do You Remember Love?, it gained legendary status among fans for containing several minutes of completely new, high-quality animation. This new footage includes:
- The Megaroad-01 Launch: The departure of the colony ship was originally planned for the TV series ending but was cut due to production constraints.
- Minmay's Final Earth Concert: A fully animated sequence accompanying the song "Angel's Paints" (Tenshi no Enogu), which was initially intended for the theatrical movie's credits.
