Phoenix 2772: Love's Cosmozone (火の鳥2772 愛のコスモゾーン, Hi no Tori 2772: Ai no Kosumozōn) is a landmark 1980 Japanese animated science fiction film directed by Taku Sugiyama and co-written and produced by the legendary "God of Manga," Osamu Tezuka.
It serves as a standalone theatrical expansion of Tezuka's overarching lifelong masterwork manga series, Phoenix (Hi no Tori). In Western markets, the movie was heavily edited, re-dubbed, and released under the alternative title Space Firebird.
Core Plot & Themes
The film takes place in a highly advanced, sterile dystopian future where the Earth's natural resources are entirely depleted. Human development is completely managed by automated computers.
The Protagonist: A young orphan named Godo is raised in a sterile environment to become a pilot and space cadet.
The Companion: To assist him, he is given Olga, a shapeshifting android caretaker. Olga develops a deep, devoted affection for him.
The Mission: Godo is eventually tasked with tracking down the mythical Phoenix. The cosmic entity possesses limitless energy that could rejuvenate the dying Earth.
The Conflict & Resolution: The chase evolves into a philosophical exploration of sacrifice and love. In a tragic yet transcendent finale, the cosmic Phoenix bonds with Olga's android form to experience human devotion, ultimately allowing the renewal of Earth through a cyclical rebirth of life.
