Plot Summary
- The Opening (December 04, U.C. 0079): Near the end of the One Year War, a Zeon Musai-class warship comes under attack by Earth Federation Forces. A Zeon officer loads a Komusai shuttle with a group of young children to ensure their safety before the ship is destroyed. [1, 2]
- The Post-War Search (U.C. 0080): Following the end of the war and the disbandment of the 08th MS Team, Michel Ninorich has retired from the Federation military. He and Kiki Rosita travel together into the jungle to search for Shiro Amada and Aina Sahalin, whose fates were left uncertain after the battle with the Apsalus III. [1, 2, 3]
- The Wreckage and the Children: The pair discovers the crashed Komusai shuttle. Inside, they find a helmet filled with dog tags and data disks linked to the Flanagan Institute (a Zeon research facility studying Newtypes). [1, 2, 3]
- The Encounter: Kiki and Michel are captured by the mysterious group of children living in the wreckage. The children initially trick or tell them that Shiro and Aina are dead and show them empty graves. However, it is later revealed that Shiro taught the children how to survive, and Kiki and Michel ultimately track down Shiro and a pregnant Aina traveling north. [1, 2, 3]
Thematic Role
- Epilogue Focus: Unlike the heavy battlefield action of the main arc (such as "The Shuddering Mountain"), "Last Resort" shifts to a quiet, human-focused post-war reflection on survival and the lives left behind after the conflict.
- Character Resolution: It provides a definitive peaceful resolution for Shiro and Aina, moving away from military politics to show them carving out a life together
