Episode 15 of the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam series is titled "Cucuruz Doan's Island"

It is best known for its deeply troubled production, notorious animation quality, and its unique status as a "lost" episode in the Western release.

This episode is famous among anime fans for having some of the lowest-quality animation in the entire series.

Because series creator Yoshiyuki Tomino felt the episode took away from the overall urgency of the main plot he ordered it skipped. As a result, Episode 15 was never dubbed or included in the original English- language release of the show.

2022 Theatrical Reimagining

The story of this infamous episode was so beloved by fans and creators for its emotional weight that it was adapted into a full- length, high-budget theatrical movie in 2022 titled Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island, directed by original character designer Yoshikazu Yasuhiko.

This once-obscure, poorly animated battle eventually became a massive inside joke and legendary piece of trivia among fans. Recognizing its cult classic status, Sunrise and director Yoshikazu Yasuhiko fully embraced the "meme" legacy by adapting this single 20-minute episode into a high-budget, beautifully animated theatrical feature film titled Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan's Island. The film carefully honors the classic meme by purposefully designing Doan's upgraded Zaku with its iconic mismatched armor and slightly distorted head shape to reflect its rough, scavenger lore.
