In this specific scene from Lesson 1: The Legend Begins, Nanako's parents are confronting her about her behavior and grades, completely ignoring their own failing marriage. This family breakdown is what drives Nanako to act out, prompting Eikichi Onizuka to later smash down the physical wall dividing their rooms with a sledgehammer to force them to look at each other and talk again.
