Dragon Ball Z Episode 172, titled "A New Guardian" (originally titled "Find a New God!! Goku, the Great Instantaneous Movement" in Japan), is the 7th episode of the Cell Games Saga and the 172nd overall episode of the series. It marks a crucial transition point where the heroes realize they need the Dragon Balls to undo Cell’s destruction, prompting Goku to seek out a new Guardian for Earth.
*Key Debut*: Features the background introduction/news mentions of Hercule Satan
Piccolo Exits the Time Chamber: Piccolo finishes his intensive training inside the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. While his power has massively increased, Goku honestly notes that he still isn't strong enough to defeat Cell. Vegeta immediately takes Piccolo's place to begin his second round of training.
The Military's Futile Attack: Panic grips the world, leading Earth's Royal Defense Army to launch a massive conventional military strike on Cell's tournament grounds. Using advanced tanks and fighter jets, they unleash a full assault. Cell stands entirely unfazed and effortlessly wipes out the entire military force in seconds.
The Search for a New Kami: Witnessing the slaughter, Goku realizes they desperately need the Dragon Balls to resurrect Cell's victims. Because Kami permanently fused with Piccolo, the Earth's Dragon Balls no longer exist. Piccolo reveals that Namekian fusions cannot be undone, meaning they must find a completely new Guardian.
Goku Departs for New Namek: Goku utilizes his Instant Transmission (Instantaneous Movement) to lock onto the energy signatures of the Namekians. He teleports away from Earth, arriving on New Planet Namek to ask King Kai and the Namekian Elder for help.
