"A Very Strange Chase" (とってもおかしな大追跡, Tottemo Okashina Daitsuiseki) is the 9th episode of the first season of the classic anime series Cat's Eye, which originally aired in Japan on September 5, 1983.
Episode OverviewThe Conflict: The episode starts with Hitomi Kisugi furious at her detective boyfriend, Toshio Utsumi, after a date goes completely wrong.
The Target: The Cat's Eye trio (Hitomi, Rui, and Ai) targets a painting called "The Woman with the Red Hat". However, a mafia boss also takes a sudden interest in the artwork, forcing the sisters to accelerate their plans.
The Twist: In an desperate attempt to outsmart Cat's Eye, Toshio decides that the only foolproof strategy is to steal the painting himself before they can get to it. He takes the painting and runs, intending to keep it moving until the heist deadline passes.
The Chase: With their roles reversed, Hitomi has to hunt down her own boyfriend. The pursuit spans across the city of Yokohama and leads to a comical climax where both Hitomi and Toshio accidentally fall down and get trapped at the bottom of a well. With no immediate escape, the thief and the detective are forced to work together to find a way out.
