From the official original Mobile Suit Gundam "The Ride A Baoa Qu" which is pretty much lost history now except for a few videos

Probably the most random, unique and bizarre nod/cameos thats ever happened, Gundam and Thomas the Tank engine.

Thomas:

A Federation officer who serves as the helmsman and computer operator inside the Escape Launch (the shuttle vehicle that the theme park audience "boards" during the ride)

The Design Style: Unlike the 1979 TV series, the human characters for Gundam the Ride were designed by the legendary artist Haruhiko Mikimoto (famous for Macross and Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket). This accounts for the highly detailed, modern linework and the updated aesthetic of the Federation normal suit.

Because this character was named Thomas, the production staff at Sunrise couldn't resist making the obvious connection to Thomas the Tank Engine.

The doodle in the upper right corner-complete with a speech bubble pointing right at his name- was drawn by an animator as an internal joke during the production of the ride's cinematic segments.

Gundam the Ride:

A Baoa Qu is an amusement park ride that was part of Japan's Fuji-Q Highland from 2000-2007. Set near the end of the Universal Century's One Year War, the ride's guests are colonists who get caught up in the fighting at the Battle of A Baoa Qu.

The Experience:

Guests boarded a Federation transport vehicle that simulated the motion of dodging enemy fire and debris during the One Year War. Guided by two chatty Earth Federation GM mobile suit pilots, riders were escorted through the chaotic, CGI-rendered space battles. The ride immersed fans in the same historical timeframe as the anime, ending right as the war concluded and the Granada Treaty was being negotiated.

Legacy and Replacement:

The attraction was hugely popular among Gundam fans and even spawned exclusive collectible merchandise, such as special edition Master Grade (MG) and "MS in Action" toy sets. After its run ended on January 8, 2007, the ride was replaced by a live-action attraction called Gundam Crisis, where visitors were tasked with solving puzzles to retrieve data before time expired
