Giant Robo Gaiden ~ The Silver Bell with Blue Eyes (originally released as Aoi Hitomi no GinRei) is the third and final episode of the Giant Robo Gaiden: GinRei Special OVA spin-off series. Released on February 21, 1995, this standalone episode centers entirely around GinRei, the iconic and stylish secret agent from the acclaimed mecha masterpiece Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Still. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Key Details & Overview
- Release Date: February 21, 1995
- Director: Yasuhiro Imagawa (the same visionary director behind the main Giant Robo OVA)
- Studio: Animated by Ashi Productions
- Format: Single-episode OVA (running alongside two other GinRei comedic spin-offs: Barefoot GinRei and Mighty GinRei) [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]
Plot and Setting
Unlike the main series' heavy tragic tone and grand orchestral scale, this Gaiden episode takes a hard swerve into a surreal, action-packed "Wild West" desert parody. [1, 3]
- The Mission: GinRei and her hot-tempered partner Tetsugyu are sent deep into a desert wilderness to investigate a research team that has completely vanished. [, 2]
- The Homage: The episode is highly stylized and serves as a direct cinematic tribute to classic Western filmmaking. Its iconic opening segment heavily parodies the visual style, tense editing, and atmosphere of Sergio Leone’s legendary film Once Upon a Time in the West. [1]
Cult Appeal
While the second episode (Mighty GinRei) is famous for introducing a giant robot built in GinRei's exact likeness (and inventing the internet-famous "boobzooka" meme), Blue Eyes leans more into a retro-futuristic spy adventure. It blends classic '60s spy aesthetics with the over-the-top mecha drama and high-quality 90s cel animation that Giant Robo is revered for.
Generally only 10-30 scripts each episode exist. These aren't for public sale and occasionally get sneaked out or given at very selected conventions in Japan, I'm keeping 1 for my own collection so get it while you can.
